Kimel elected secretary of research society

Angela Kimel, MBA, CCRP, research associate for the Department of Epidemiology, Division of Public Health Sciences, has been elected secretary of the national Society of Clinical Research Associates (SoCRA). Kimel was voted into the position by general election; competing against another board member internationally. All SoCRA members were eligible to vote. As secretary of SoCRA, Kimel will oversee board meeting minutes, sign documents for board members, maintain archives and serve as parliamentarian to implement stated rules and policies.

Kimel became a member of SoCRA in 2002, the same year she received Certified Clinical Research Professional designation. She is also the founder and chair of the Northwest NC SoCRA chapter, which was started in 2003. “Being elected to the position of secretary by my colleagues in clinical research is a great honor,” said Kimel. “While serving SoCRA, I will also be carrying Wake Forest Baptist to an international level—promoting clinical research and encouraging the education of research professionals.” Kimel has worked at Wake Forest Baptist for 15 years, 10 of which were in clinical research settings. In addition, she currently works as regulatory monitor for the ACCORD trial; a large, international trial that has enrolled more than 10,000 people in 77 clinical sites. She has also served on the Wake Forest Baptist Institutional Review Board for four straight years.

Two PHS Faculty Receive Research Awards

Dr. Yongmei Liu and Dr. Mark Wolfson received awards at the Twelfth Annual Wake Forest University Health Sciences Basic and Clinical Research Awards Day.  Dr. Liu received the New Investigator in Clinical Sciences Award.  She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Prevention.  Dr. Wolfson received the Mid-Career Investigator in Clinical Sciences Award.  He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Sciences & Health Policy.  The awards were presented at a ceremony on November 21, 2008.

Soliman’s Electrocardiograph (ECG) Cable on the cover of a scientific journal

Dr. Soliman’s patent-pending electrocardiograph (ECG) cable made the cover art of the September/October issue of the Journal of Electrocardiology, the official Journal of the International Society for Computerized Electrocardiology and the International Society of Electrocardiology. “Soliman presents what seems like a possible final solution to the problem of cable switches involving the lower limb cables” “We hope to see a device manufacturer adopt as standard this creative solution” are some of the comments mentioned in the 3 Editorials accompanied the description of the modification. The Journal also published, in the same issue, another simple method Dr. Soliman suggested to control for variations in ECG chest electrodes in clinical trials and epidemiologic studies.
