RESEARCH:
Dr. Shumaker's primary areas of research include: women's health, psychosocial factors in chronic diseases,
social resources, adherence/retention, health-related quality of life, aging (cognitive decline, dementia,
disability) , and, hormone therapy (CVD, menopause). In addition, she conducts national training programs in
conflict management, mediation and communication. She has been a Principal Investigator or Co-Principal
Investigator on a number of grants and contracts with the NIH, foundations and Industry. Currently, Dr.
Shumaker is: PI on the Clinical Facilitation Center for the Women's Health Initiative, and Chair of the WHI
Performance Monitoring Committee; PI on the Women's Health Initiative Memory Study (WHIMS); PI on the
Women's Health Initiative Study of Cognitive Aging; PI on the Cognitive Study of Roloxafene and
Tomoxifene (Co-STAR); and Co-PI on the Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center.
Dr. Shumaker is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA), the American Psychological
Society, and the Society for Behavioral Medicine, as well as a member of a number of other professional
organizations. In addition, she is past-president of the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues,
and a past member of the APA Council of Representatives. She has over 150 publications in the areas of
older women's health, dementia, health-related quality of life, adherence, and psychosocial factors in disease
history and progression, and has given invited addresses on these topics throughout the world.
